Best practices for cloud monitoring

AWS | Azure | GCP

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

  • Enable uptime monitoring to track the availability status of various supported services.
  • Use the advanced configuration settings to create default threshold profiles, automatically create monitor groups leveraging native AWS tags, suppress non-actionable alerts, customize your Guidance Report, and alert the right personnel.
  • Configure Metric Profile for all AWS monitors, so that you can select, and obtain only those Amazon CloudWatch metrics you choose to reduce the CloudWatch costs.
  • Enable all best practice checks and use default baselines for the AWS Guidance Report so that you don't miss security vulnerabilities and can analyze if your cloud infrastructure complies with global security and compliance standards.
  • Schedule inventory reports for AWS services to view the overall resource count and resource metadata of your monitored AWS account based on multiple configurations such as configured regions or time.

Azure

In Azure portal:

  • Provide enough access to Site24x7 for seamless monitoring: Azure.
  • For virtual machines (VMs) hosted in the cloud, allow Site24x7's IPs and domains to maintain an uninterrupted network connection.

In Site24x7 Azure monitors:

  • Enable the Auto-add new subscriptions for monitoring option so you don't need to manually add new subscriptions to monitoring every time you create one.
  • Select only the resource types you actively need monitoring for.
    • For example, if your applications run on Azure Virtual Machines but Azure Data Factory is not that critical for your business to be monitored, you can uncheck Azure Data Factory from the Service/Resource Types drop-down menu.
  • Assign tags to your resources in the Azure portal and also in Site24x7 for ease of administration.
  • Always have the Auto-discover New Resources field enabled to have complete observability over your cloud resources, especially in an auto-scaling environment. Site24x7 will discover and start monitoring your recently spawned resources automatically.
  • Customize threshold configurations to align with your requirements.
  • Integrate third-party notification platforms of your choice in addition to the standard alerting options.
  • Enable custom email templates if you would like your email alerts to be tailored to your requirements.
  • Enable Guidance Reports to get notifications when a cloud resource is underperforming, underutilized, or under security threats. You can also use Guidance Reports to get regular updates when any of your cloud resources breach the optimal usage expectations.
    • Note: You can even set custom guideline values on which future Guidance Reports will be generated. For example, Site24x7 sends a report when some of your VMs haven't been used for two weeks. You can set the values to ensure the report is triggered for VMs not used for one week as well.
  • Create custom dashboards to view your business-critical metrics easily.
  • Enable AppLogs integration to sift through Azure diagnostic logs faster and more efficiently.

Google Cloud (GCP)

In Google Cloud portal:

  • Provide enough access to Site24x7 for seamless monitoring: Google Cloud.
  • For virtual machines (VMs) hosted in the cloud, allow Site24x7's IPs and domains to maintain an uninterrupted network connection.

In Site24x7 Google Cloud monitors:

  • Enable the Auto-add new subscriptions for monitoring option so you don't need to manually add new subscriptions to monitoring every time you create one.
  • Select only the resource types you actively need monitoring for.
    • For example, if your applications run on Google Compute Engine but Cloud Run is not that critical for your business to be monitored, you can uncheck Cloud Run from the Service/Resource Types drop-down menu.
  • Assign tags to your resources in the Google Cloud portal and also in Site24x7 for ease of administration.
  • Always have the Auto-discover New Resources field enabled to have complete observability over your cloud resources, especially in an auto-scaling environment. Site24x7 will discover and start monitoring your recently spawned resources automatically.
